My Life as a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland

#1 in the White Trash Zombies series
Published July 5, 2011 by DAW books
5 Stars

Goodreads Review
Angel Crawford is a loser.

Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she's a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who's been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.

That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in an horrible car crash, but she doesn't have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there's a job waiting for her at the parish morgue—and that it's an offer she doesn't dare refuse.

Before she knows it she's dealing with a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey—just when she's hungriest!

Angel's going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn't, she's dead meat.

Literally.

Review:  I found out about My Life as a White Trash Zombie from Felicia Day's Vaginal Fantasy Book Club.  This was my first read for the club and I have to say that while I don't think it was a vaginal fantasy MLasWTZ was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The zombies in MLasWTZ aren't standard zombies in that they retain their humanity as long as they consume brains on a regular basis, as opposed to the usual mindless re-animated corpse.  In this way Angel is more like a vampire, especially like the vampires in the Daybreakers movie (with Ethan Hawke and Sam Neil, am I the only person who's seen this movie?).  As long as she has brains she can pass off as human.  This didn't bother me at all but some people were squicked out by the eating brains and the idea of undead sexy times (even though physical romance is very light), so be warned if you're squeamish.

I have to say that my most favorite part of MLasWTZ was Angel and her inner monologue, which is hilarious and sarcastic and awesome.  She also goes through so much transformation, both physically, emotionally, and mentally.  Angel starts off as an unambitious pill head with a dead beat boyfriend and an abusive father.  Throughout the book though she really comes into her own.  She starts to care about her situation and she realizes that she is not only capable of more, she is worthy.  The Vaginal Fantasy Book Club usually reads romance novels, but as one commenter so aptly put it, this is a story about Angel finding love for herself.

Ultimately I don't think that Angel is white trash.  I think that just because you're living in poverty or have an addiction problem doesn't automatically make you white trash.  I think that white trash is a state of complacency, a willingness to stay in your current situation and not work to try and change it.

Overall I really loved My Life as a White Trash Zombie.  It was quirky mystery and a great introduction to The Vaginal Fantasy Book Club.  I'm really looking forward to the second book in the series and to reading more VFBC selections.

Friday Face Off Cover Reveal: A Darkness Strange and Lovely

Friday Face Off is a meme hosted by one of my favorite book bloggers Misty over at The Book Rat. Usually this meme focuses on different cover designs for the same book and decides which is better for the story. I wanted to take this meme and add a little twist to it today by discussing a cover reveal!
I just realized I didn't write any other posts since my last Friday Face Off, so sorry about that!  My keyboard is still  broken and typing with the onscreen keyboard is super annoying.  I'm getting a new one this weekend hopefully so I'll be back to reviewing soon, promise :).

This week I want to talk about A Darkness Strange and Lovely by Susan Dennard, #2 in the Something Strange and Deadly series set to release July 23, 2013 from HarperTeen.

I think these covers are so pretty!  The best part of these covers is the background.  I almost want to take the girl off the cover just so I can see what all is going on behind them.  I don't think these really portray the historical element of the novels (they're set in 1876, can you tell?) but they definitely convey the paranormal aspect very well.

What do you guys think?  Post in the comments!

Friday Face Off Cover Reaveal: Dance of the Red Death

Friday Face Off is a meme hosted by one of my favorite book bloggers Misty over at The Book Rat. Usually this meme focuses on different cover designs for the same book and decides which is better for the story. I wanted to take this meme and add a little twist to it today by discussing a cover reveal!

I haven't done a Friday Face Off in a while and I have missed it!  I don't know how current this cover reveal is, but I love it so I really wanted to show it off.  This week I want to discuss Dance of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin, the sequel to her debut novel, Masque of the Red Death.  This final book in the duology set to come out April 23, 2013 from Greenwillow books.

I LOVE these covers!  They are stunning and go together so well.  I own Masque and in real life it has a beautiful iridescent sheen to it that really gives the cover a magical quality.  I haven't read it yet, but I really want to own this lovely pair to decorate my shelves.

What do you guys think?  Post in the comments!

Top Ten Best TV Shows On Netflix Instant

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This meme was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

This week is a free week so I'm going to talk about my favorite shows on Netflix instant watch.  I LOVE the instant watch option for Netflix and I have watched many TV shows, so here is a list of my favorites (warning, this will be VERY Joss Whedon heavy!).

1.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The entire 7 seasons of Buffy are on Netflix instant (along with the spin off series, Angel) and is a cult classic and essential for all internet/Joss Whedon nerds.  In my opinion Buffy is a culture icon of the late 90s/early 2000s and a must watch.

2.  The Guild - Created by Internet maven Felicia Day as a webseries, The Guild is a fantastic show about a rag-tag group of MMO gamers that start to interact IRL.  I love this show because the characters in the show ARE my friends.  Anyone who plays WoW or knows someone who does will appreciate this show.

I love their avatar costumes!  I want to be Codex!
3.  Dance Academy - This Australian show is a stereotypical teen drama to be sure, but I still love it.  Dance Academy follows the story of Tara, a young dancer from the country who is accepted to the prestigious National Dance Academy.  While the show is super teen-cheese I still was really invested in the characters (I actually cried at the end of series 2, I'll admit it).  It's a great show for fans of Save the Last Dance or Center Stage.

4.  Revenge - Revenge is a new find for me, but it is completely engrossing.  I haven't finished the first season yet, but I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Emily work her way into the bed of her enemies and seeing her cope with chinks in her plan.

5.  Sherlock - This modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes breathes some much needed life into the slew of crime dramas that are currently on tv.  It's funny and interesting and extremely clever and one of the best Sherlock Holmes adaptations I've ever seen (though as much as people seem to love Benedict Cumberbatch I cannot seem to get his creeptastic character from Atonement out of my head).

That mustache gives me nightmares
6.  Firefly - The only bad thing about Firefly is there's only one season.  Nathan Fillion is fantastic and so is the rest of the crew.  Be sure to check out not only the series but the follow up movie Serenity.

7.  Dollhouse - Another Joss Whedon show (told you there was a lot!) and Dollhouse introduced me to Topher Grace, one of my favorite tv characters ever.

One word - HOT
8.  The Walking Dead - I LOVE ZOMBIES.  The Walking Dead does a great job showing not only the awesome zombie murder-gore action but also the psychological, social, and ethical impact a zombie outbreak will have.  The best zombie tv show, ever.

9.  My So Called Life - My So Called Life was one of the first teen focused shows to deal with drugs, suicide, and homosexuality in a very real and honest way.  There's only one season and it ends on such a cliffhanger, I'm not sure I'm ever going to get over not knowing if Angela and Jordan ever got together and if there was anything to that Lesbian-ish vibe between Rayanne and Sharon.

10.  Skins (UK) - The first two seasons of Skins is absolutely fantastic.  The cast is phenomenal and the writing on point.  Ignore the 3rd season on and the US remake and you'll be good to go.

November 2012 New Reads

Hi everyone, here are the November new releases, and it is the month of red covers lol.  This isn't a complete list, just some of the ones I'm interested in. I hope this list will help feed your readers!

November 6

Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor
#2 in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series

Why I'm Excited:  I adored Daughter of Smoke and Bone and I am so excited to continue the series!  I plan on re-reading Daughter before Days comes out because I don't want another Insurgent disappointment.

Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout
#3 in the Covenant series

Why I'm Excited: I've heard many good things about this author and this series in particular.  I have the first book on my kindle and I really want to start it soon!

November 13

Bad Hair Day by Carrie Harris
#2 in the Kate Grable series

Why I'm Excited:  I read the first book in the series, Bad Taste in Boys, last year and I thought it was so cute!  It's a great middle grade zombie novel and I'm really excited to continue the series.  I have an egalley from netgalley so I know I will be reading this soon.

Black City by Elizabeth Richards
#1 in the Black City series
DAC

Why I'm Excited:  Black City sounds like a really cool mix of dystopian and urban fantasy.  I'm really interested in this series but I am a little worried it will be the standard paranormal romance disguised as science fiction.  We shall see....

Reached by Ally Condie
#3 in the Matched series

Why I'm Excited:  This is one of those series I'm really embarrassed to admit I haven't started yet.  It's gotten a lot of good reviews, I must start it soon!
